Microsoft Challenge: Hacker Wins $100000 For Breaking Microsoft Linux OS Security

  • Microsoft challenge hackers to break the security of the company’s custom Linux OS
  • Microsoft chose Linux over latest Windows for its IoT security medium
  • Three-month research to run from June 1st to August 31st.

Tech giant, Microsoft has come up with an open Microsoft challenge to hack company’s very popular Linux OS. Microsoft challenge offers $100000(Rs. 76,67,500) as this is not any old Linux OS.

They put up a compact and custom version of Linux last year designed for its Azure Sphere Operating System. It is designed for running on specialized chips for the Internet of Things (IoT) platforms.

The software giant has used Linux over windows 10 for IoT security medium. That’s why American technology company has announced a three-month Microsoft challenge. It’s definitely going to be a difficult for the hackers.

Company is specifically looking for a security analyst to try security levels for its Linux OS so they came up with this unique idea. To make it more interesting Microsoft Challenge offers $100000 (Rs. 76,67,500) rewards which is a huge amount.

Sylvie Liu, a security program manager at Microsoft said ” “We will award up to $100,000 bounty for specific scenarios in the Azure Sphere Security Research Microsoft Challenge during the program period.

Added, “Security is a team sport and security researchers are so important to making technology as secure as possible.”

Azure Sphere Security Research Microsoft Challenge will be from June 1st to August 31st. Security researchers have to submit their applications before May 15 for this 3 months Linux OS security challenge.

Also 50 hackers who will be accepted among the all received applications. Selected analyst will get the access to all the resources they need to break the security.

Resources include include Azure Sphere development kit, product documentation along with other Microsoft products and services. Physical attacks are out of scope for this.

Need To Do Microsoft Challenge

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella believes IoT devices are future beyond Windows, iOS, and Android. There will be billions of IoT devices going to be in use as per the analyst.

He said “The way I look at it is Windows is the billion user install base of ours. We continue to add a couple of hundred million PCs every year, and we want to serve that in a super good way. The thing that we also want to think about is the broader context. We don’t want to be defined by just what we achieved.”

He added, “We look at if there’s going to be 50 billion endpoints. Windows with its billion is good, Android with its 2 billion is good, iOS with its billion is good — but there is 46 billion more. So let’s go and look at what that 46 billion plus 4 [billion] looks like, and define a strategy for that, and then have everything have a place under the sun.”

IoT is Microsoft’s one important aspect. Company believe “security landscape is constantly changing with emerging technology and security threats. Keeping Azure exceptionally secure for our customers is a top priority.” .

Hence in a hope that the challenge will help to uncover vulnerabilities for Azure sphere. There might be some loopholes that go unnoticed. However, company firmly believe in security of linux OS and claims there is no such vulnerabilities on Azure sphere.

That’s the reason Microsoft Challenge offers $100000. But, if there is any loophole you will get a huge amount. If you feel you can then you should fill the application form and surely take your chance on Microsoft Challenge.

Might be you could crack it. So hackers be ready to win!!!
